How to prevent adult acne

As you notice, those guidelines are nothing more than common sense advice to healthy living. What it comes down to is that you cannot escape the fact the acne is a sign that your body is not in a healthy, balanced state.

I know that it's not something you like to hear. It probably makes you feel a little uncomfortable, because it puts the responsibility on you. You actually have to DO something that may initially be little hard and uncomfortable. You just can't throw money on it and get the 'magic pill' that solves your problems.

If you feel that you are up to it, I recommend that you focus your efforts on 3 key areas:

  • Diet and nutrition
  • Stress and mental attitude
  • Lifestyle choices

"Acne suddenly made so much sense"

That's what Maria wrote to me after she finished my FREE Acne 101: What Einstein would have done to get clear minicourse.

"Good work! Finally, I got a healthy skin now... Thank you very much Mr. Seppo Puusa!! God bless."

Acne 101 PROVES that acne is 100% under you control. That you can get clear. It clearly shows there is nothing mystical or strange about acne. And that the road to clear skin makes perfect sense.

"THANK U!!! I owe my now-beautiful skin to you =)"

"I thought it was very eye-opening and informative. It suddenly all made so much sense. Now I know what I need to focus on to get completely clear. No more looking in the wrong (and often harmful) places."

Diet and nutrition

First you need to make sure that the food you eat is digested properly - instead of rotting in the gut and creating more toxins. To do that you need to:

Secondly, stop or minimize eating foods that cause acne. Pretty obvious, right? If you want to prevent acne better not to eat foods that cause it. But, you hit the brick wall, because nobody really knows which foods cause and acne which are 'pimple safe'. Every time you see someone on acne-forums saying that these foods cause acne for them there are 5 people screaming the opposite.

Confusing - huh?

I'll let you in a little secret. There are no such foods that causes acne. Yet there are foods that improve your health (and indirectly prevent and 'cure' acne) and foods that degrade your health (and indirectly cause and aggravate acne).

Here's a list of foods to avoid if you want to prevent acne.

Also avoid most of the processed foods in the supermarkets. Practically all of them contain hidden toxic ingredients that you must avoid if you want to have a clear and healthy skin.

Stress and mental attitude

OK, now that you got your diet handled lets switch on the x-ray mode of our investigative spotlight and look at what's running inside your head. Because, like it not, your mental state (i.e. how you feel) has a tremendous impact on your health and wellbeing. Some even say that it has a greater impact than diet and nutrition does.

What ever the truth may be please understand that healthy body requires a healthy mind - and vice versa.

I bet you have even experienced this yourself. Can you remember a time when you have been stressed or feeling bad for a whole day. The changes are that by evening your head started to ache, or you got some other physical discomfort. After a day or two few pimples might have popped out. That's an example of negative mental state affecting your physical body.

Let's take a positive example. Let's say that you've been feeling bad the whole day. But you decide not to sit there and cry over it, instead you go for a jog. After a vigorous physical exercise it's hard to even remember why you felt bad before. That's a positive example of the mind-body connection.

I know that these aren't scientifically-proven, all inclusive and conclusive examples, but the connection is there. Trust me. To understand it just observe yourself for a week or two.

So what can you do about it? Here's an article about what causes stress and the best ways to prevent it.

Environment and lifestyle

Exercise to prevent acne

I know you've heard this before, but what have you done about it? So move that butt of yours. You already know it's good for you, and now you it may even prevent adult acne.

Did you know that most harmful acne-causing bacteria can NOT survive in an alkaline and oxygen rich environment? It's poison for them. And you know what, exercise is an excellent way to alkalize and oxygenate the body. Here's another simple breathing technique to pump oxygen to your blood.

Already exercising - great! In any case I recommend reading this article: Exercise to prevent adult acne, it discusses the best types of exercise to prevent acne and how exercise prevents acne.

Unhealthy habits

More stuff you already know. I'm talking about alcohol, smoking, coffee and other legal drugs. Look, even though there are no studies saying that any of those things cause or aggravate acne doesn't mean they won't. More likely no one has looked at it.

The fact still remains that what's bad for the body, what brings body out of balance is good for acne. And nobody denies that smoking, alcohol and coffee are bad for the body.

Pollution and other poisons

I left this as the last one, because you have the least control over these things. Get the other things right and you can pretty much forget these. Do what you can t oavoid them, but don't sweat over it. Nobody expects you to live in the mountains and sustain yourself with pure SPRING water.

The three important things you have control over are the personal care products you use, the indoor air quality and water quality. Most of the common soaps, shampoos, make-up, etc... are filled with chemicals. These chemicals go through the skin (remember how nicotine patches work) and eventually burden the liver. If possible choose natural products (from a health store, the 'natural' stuff in the supermarkets and Body Shop is not really better than the normal stuff).

You could also get some plants into your house, and especially into bedroom, to clean the air. Finally, get a water filter. The tap water in most countries is filled with chemicals. Even a simple filter sold in the supermarkets will greatly improve the water quality.
